When trying to impress a new client you may be tempted to dress up your report. Don't!!!!

When compiling your report keep to the facts that you learned. Avoid flowering up the narrative with your exploits, the methods/techniques that you employed (except where needed), or adding filler to make the report appear longer.

"Investigator found a convenient location to provide cover and concealment while observing the target. Parking in a location that would not bring unwanted attention Investigator utilized a 35 mm digital camera with telephoto lens. Four photographs of target were captured using the low light setting." on and on and on..

Ok, you probably wouldn't consider adding all that information to your report. Some investigators have. Keeping your report concise, identifying just the relevant facts will ensure that your client has a report that provides them with the necessary information. If you are required to give a deposition, the more information your provide that is not directly relevant is subject to being questioned by the attorney.

Your report is a reflection of your work. Always proofread, edit, proofread again and stick to "Just the Facts".
